Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint essential oil is obtained from the leaves of Mentha Piperita, by steam distillation. It is strongly aromatic perennial herb (Mentha piperita, mint family). It has a sharp odor that’s cool and refreshing, source of a widely used flavouring. Native to Europe and Asia, it has been naturalized in North America. Oil of peppermint is widely used to flavour confectionery, chewing gum, toothpastes, and medicines. The oil also contains menthol, long used medicinally as a soothing balm.
The main chemical components of peppermint oil are menthol 30-60% and menthone 10-30%. However, there are many more as well. Menthol is the main ingredient used in many throat lozenges and cough drops used to treat sore throats. It also have been used to treat pain from tension headaches, migraine headaches, and other causes. It displayed potential therapeutic efficacy for the treatment of chronic inflammatory disorders such as allergic rhinitis, colitis and bronchial asthma.
